Space-time breakdown in Julio Cortázar's fantastic tales

As the title may reveal, my work will focus on space-time breakdowns in Julio Cortázar's (1914-1984) oeuvre. This Argentinian writer's work is centered mainly on the fantastic genre, specifically on tales. He is one of the most important representants of this genre in the zone of Río de la Plata, although for the most of his life he lived in Paris, where also many of his works were written. With help of other literary critics and theorists, I will try to define the space-time breakdowns in his creation. Tzvetan Todorov in his The Fantastic: A Structural Approach to a Literary Genre, distinguishes between three main categories: the strange, the fantastic and the marvelous. Another critic, Ana María Barrenechea, in her a little bit more vital theory divides the fantastic into these three categories: the natural, the unnatural and the mixture of both. As an example I will use four of Cortázar's tales. On those, I will apply the mentioned theories, nevertheless I will also point out the possible lack of clarity and obsolescence in them and will try to offer some new alternative solutions. Surrealistic Moments in Raymond Queneau's Novels The objective of this thesis is to study the connection between Raymond Queneau's novels and surrealism. Raymond Queneau was part of the surrealistic group for only a relatively short time and after he left it, he fully rejected the surrealistic movement and concentrated his literary output in another direction. Nevertheless, there are surrealistic moments to be found in his work, on which this thesis will focus. The thesis contains a brief characterisation of surrealism as a literary movement and a basic overview of Raymond Queneau's life and the structure of his works. Special focus is given to the part of the author's life when he was active in the surrealistic group. The thesis further studies the period of time when Raymond Queneau was no longer part of the surrealistic group and when he turned his attention to completely different literary aspects of his production and participated in the work of other literary groups, whose methods differed substantially from the methods of surrealism (Oulipo); special focus is given to the significant aspects of the author's output, i.e. emphasis on the literary form, structure and order of his works. The interest of postmodern writers and reviewers has given rise to accentuating some of the partial aspects of the works of Svetoslav Minkov, Vladimir Polyanov, Georgi Raychev and Chavdar Mutafov.
